Taras Luka is a Ukrainian-Canadian composer, pianist, accordionist, arranger, and music director based in Vancouver, Canada.His work spans concert music, theatre, film, jazz, and interdisciplinary performance, bringing together classical traditions, contemporary composition, and cinematic storytelling. Throughout his career, Taras has collaborated with orchestras, theatres, film festivals, and cultural institutions across Canada, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, and the United States.As a composer, he has created original works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles, theatre productions, and film. In 2022, his orchestral work Choral of Freedom received its world premiere in Italy under the baton of renowned conductor Oksana Lyniv as part of the international Concerto per la Pace project organized in partnership with the Italian Red Cross. The work was presented at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Teatro Verdi Pordenone and was recognized for its artistic response to themes of freedom, human dignity, and peace.Taras has served as composer, arranger, conductor, and music director for numerous theatrical productions, including musical Romeo & Juliet, Heart in Half, and other stage works presented in Ukraine and Poland. His theatre projects have received national nominations and international festival recognition.As a performer, Taras appears regularly as a pianist and accordionist in both classical and jazz settings. His original music has been presented at major cultural events and festivals, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, North Shore Jazz Festival, Odesa International Film Festival, Odesa International Jazz Festival, Teatr Polski w Bydgoszczy, Filharmonia Łódzka, Opera i Filharmonia Podlaska, Vancouver Fashion Week, Victoria Symphony Orchesrta and other international arts platforms.He is the creator and performer of Man Behind the Camera, an original live cinema project featuring his solo piano score accompanying Dziga Vertov’s landmark silent film Man with a Movie Camera (1929). The project explores the intersection of live performance and film and has been presented at cinemas, festivals, and cultural venues across Canada.Taras Luka holds a Master’s Degree from the Odesa National A.V. Nezhdanova Academy of Music. Today, his artistic practice focuses on original composition, live cinema, film scoring, orchestral music, and collaborative projects that connect music, theatre, and visual storytelling.Through a multidisciplinary international career, Taras Luka has established himself as a distinctive artistic voice whose work bridges concert music, contemporary performance, and the cinematic arts.

COMPOSER

Original score for the award-winning theatrical production based on the works of Maria Matios and directed by Oleksiy Hnatkovskyi. Premiered at the Odesa Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre, the production received two awards at the International Theatre Festival Homo Ludens 2021.

INTERNATIONAL TOUR PROJECT

POD DACHAMI PARYŻA

International touring production presented with the Symphony Orchestra of the Odesa National Opera, featuring more than 80 performances across Poland.Alongside performances as solo accordionist, the tour featured Taras Luka’s original composition A Journey for Two for accordion and symphony orchestra, highlighting his work as both composer and performer.


JAZZ PROJECTS

TARAS LUKA TRIO & SEXTET

Original compositions from the album Part of the Journey have been presented at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, North Shore Jazz Series, Jazz at the Bolt, Arts Club Theatre, and other concert venues across Canada.Performing with his trio, quartet, and sextet, Taras explores the intersection of jazz, classical music, and Eastern European traditions, creating distinctive programs that blend improvisation, chamber music, and cinematic storytelling.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT

CAROL OF THE BALLS - UKRANIAN CHRISTMAS

Taras Luka served as Music Director for Carol of the Bells – Ukrainian Christmas, a large-scale concert production presented at the Orpheum Annex in Vancouver.The production featured the world premiere of The Soul of Ukraine Christmas, an original jazz suite composed by Taras Luka. The suite incorporated three traditional Ukrainian Christmas carols, reimagined through a contemporary jazz and chamber music language while preserving their cultural and spiritual essence.The world premiere took place at the Orpheum Annex Theatre, Vancouver, in 2025.
